Ninety minutes pinned under the wall — 2,470 contracts of afternoon selling have moved price two points

Since 11:30 the session has lived between 7697 and 7709.25, its highs creeping toward the morning read's 7712 wall while cumulative delta bled from +4,481 to +2,008. The initial balance is unextended at four hours in.

Who holds territory

Buyers, narrowly

Buyers own everything above yesterday's 7699 high: today's value 7691.25–7706.75 straddles it, the point of control is 7703.5, and the afternoon lows keep landing at 7700–7702.75. They do not own 7712. The wall has held since the opening minute, and every high since 11:30 has stopped short of it.

Who is offside

The 12:45 sellers

Whoever sold the 12:45 bar down to 7697 on −1,651 of delta watched it close at 7706. Add the −412 and the selling so far in the 13:15 bar, and roughly 2,470 contracts have been hit into a market that gave up two points. Their exit is above 7709.25, and the wall they are counting on is only three points beyond that.

Opened on the wall, balanced on the complex's roof

Today's 7680.5–7716.25 range sits on the upper boundary of the 10–16 Sep complex — its 7703 value high is today's point of control, to within half a point — and directly under the 35-session composite's 7712 value low.

The 7713.5 open was the high area: 7716.25 in the 9:30 bar on −2,246, sold to 7680.5 by 10:00, and the initial balance settled at 7680.5–7716.25, 35.75 points wide.

Bars are bucketed to approximate distribution shape only. Every labelled price — POC, VAH, VAL, and the levels at right — is the exact tick-level value, not a bucket midpoint.

Today's value has been built at 7691.25–7706.75, straddling yesterday's 7699 high, with the point of control at 7703.5 on the 10–16 Sep complex's value high. The 7712 composite value low has held since the 9:30 bar; the afternoon's best is 7709.25.

Six bars between 7697 and 7709.25

Since the 11:30 bar closed at 7703.5, price has not left 7697–7709.25. The highs step up by ticks — 7707.25 at 12:00, 7707.5 at 12:15, 7707.75 at 12:30, 7708 at 12:45, 7709.25 at 13:00 — while the lows land on 7700.5–7702.75, yesterday's 7699 high acting as the floor of the afternoon.

The one attempt to break the pattern was the 12:45 bar: 7708 to 7697, closing 7706. It took out the 12:00–12:30 lows by three points, found responsive buying inside two, and closed two points from its high.

At 13:29 the initial balance is unextended either way. Four hours in, neither 7716.25 nor 7680.5 has been tested since the 10:15 bar's +2,819 turned the morning; the session has spent its afternoon in the top third of that range with the wall seven to twelve points above.

Delta peaked at 11:30 — price did not follow it down

Cumulative delta ran from −3,251 at 10:00 to +4,481 at 11:30 and has bled since: 4,392, 4,276, 4,158, 4,346, then 2,695 after the 12:45 bar and 2,283 at 13:00. Net, about 2,470 contracts have been sold since the peak, and the 11:30 close of 7703.5 has become 7701.25 — two points.

Read one way, buyers who lifted price from 7680.5 have stopped lifting: the 12:00–12:15 bars were negative delta at rising highs. Read the other, the 12:45 bar is the tell — −1,651 of aggressive selling, a 7697 low, a 7706 close. Passive buyers absorbed that at yesterday's high and did not need to chase to do it.

Both readings agree on the same thing: nobody has been able to move price. The buyers could not get through 7712 on +4,481; the sellers could not get through 7699 on −1,651.

Nothing triggered; both walls intact

The primary's > 7712 trigger has not been earned. 7712 traded in the opening minute and has not traded since; the closest approach is the 13:00 bar's 7709.25.

The alternate swept its 7699 probe and then missed its < 7680 trigger by half a point at 10:00. That level has not been revisited. The bear's < 7649 is 52 points under the last print.

The morning read said the post-Fed break would be bought back and the sellers would have to cover above 7712. Half of that has happened — the break was bought back at 7680.5 — and the half that pays is still the wall.

Squeezed between 7699 and 7712, with two and a half hours left

Buyers hold the territory, sellers hold the wall, and the afternoon sellers are the ones offside — 2,470 contracts hit for two points, exit above 7709.25. The unresolved question is whether this is a base under 7712 or a day that has run out of range.

What argued for the primary

  • Rising highs to 7709.25 under the wall
  • −1,651 absorbed at 7697, closed 7706
  • Value built above yesterday's 7699 high

What argued against

  • IB unextended at four hours
  • Delta down 2,470 since 11:30
  • 7712 untouched since the opening minute

What decided it

A balance that keeps making higher lows on yesterday's high while absorbing selling breaks up more often than down; but a day that has not extended its initial balance by 13:30 usually does not, so the primary is preferred narrowly and only above 7712.

The rest of the session

The wall gives, and the 12:45 sellers cover into a thin composite

Primary

Acceptance above 7712 extends the initial balance for the first time today and puts 2,470 contracts of afternoon selling offside. The 11 Sep value low at 7732.75 is where last week's buyers get out flat; 7746.75 is the August balance's value low beyond it.

Alternate

A break of 7680 takes out the 10:00 low, yesterday's control and the initial balance in one move, and the buyers who built value at 7691–7707 are the offside side. The 10 Sep value low at 7661.75 is first; 7649 is where the night's buyers get out flat.

Bear

Yesterday lost 60 points between 14:30 and 15:15 on −6,892 of delta. A repeat through 7649 unwinds the +8,428 overnight and puts the complex's 7623.25 value low in play, then the 14 Jul swing low at 7599.25.

What to watch

  • 7712.00 The wall, seven bars of higher highs beneath itUntouched since the 9:30 bar. A trade through it on positive delta is the primary; a tick through it that closes back under 7709.25 is the afternoon sellers getting their exit.
  • 7699.00 Yesterday's high, the afternoon's floorEvery low since 12:00 has landed at 7700.5–7702.75, except the 12:45 flush to 7697 that was bought. A close under 7699 on a full bar is the first sign the absorption has stopped.
  • 7680.00 Yesterday's control and the initial balance lowThe 10:00 low held half a point above it and it has not been revisited. Losing it late is the alternate; a repeat of yesterday's 14:30 pace through it reaches 7649 by the close.

What this is, and what it is not

This is a context gauge — the climate a discretionary decision gets made inside. It is not a trigger, a signal, or a trade.

Mechanical order-flow entry signals do not survive out-of-sample testing, and nothing here should be treated as one. The value of a read like this is subtractive: it tells you which levels matter, which side is already committed, and when to stand down — not when to click.

Every figure above is computed rather than estimated. The synthesis is machine-written from a fixed analytical framework and reviewed before publication — how these are made. Framework v1.5 (fb07b9e+)

A read like this, before every session

The pre-market read is published pre-open. Same structure every time: what the auction did, what it is trying to do, how well it is doing it, and what it is likely to do next.
